Cozumel, "Land of the Swallows" in Mayan language, is the third largest island in Mexico (647 km², 48 km from north to south and 15 km from east to west). It is located 19 km off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, making it the easternmost land in Mexico. Located at the level of the Great Barrier Reef, Cozumel is one of the best places in the world for diving, with spots of varied geography and abundant wildlife. The main reason for coming here is to dive. Most travelers come for a day trip, but staying for two or three nights is well worth it. There is a good hotel offer and a lot of things to do besides diving and snorkeling, starting with beautiful beaches. The coast is much less concreted than in Playa del Carmen. Another advantage is that there is never any sargasso on the west coast, where the beaches are where we usually swim (the sea on the coast is much rougher). On the other hand, the island is much less festive than the coast south of Cancún, the atmosphere is more peaceful and tropical. San Miguel is the arrival port of the island, the center of its activity. It is a small, quiet town that lives to the rhythm of the tourist seasons and the arrival of the liners that pour their stream of passengers in the early morning. Most of the hotels are concentrated here, as well as restaurants, car rental agencies and diving clubs. The island is quite expensive in general, but budget travellers will always find good accommodation and food for a small price.
