Between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos has a long and wide beach of white sand, which is protected from the current by a coral barrier catalogued as a national park. The village is divided in two: a residential and commercial area inland and the tourist area by the sea, which is accessed by a road through an intact mangrove. The village with its low houses has only ten streets and a small wooden pier used by fishermen. The village has retained a unique local charm, as this fishing village has escaped the tourist boom of the Riviera Maya, even if the development of resorts on its margins is, like everywhere else on the coast, uncontrolled. The village is home to a few hotels, but the main accommodation option in the town is the rental of studios(condos) that North Americans snap up during the winter season. There are many restaurants along the main beach, where one often pays more for the view than for the food. The beach in Puerto Morelos is very beautiful and will delight travelers who avoid the crowds and prefer starry nights to trendy parties. In its own way, Puerto Morelos is a more authentic destination than Tulum. It should be noted that at certain times of the year, the bay is affected like the entire coast by sargassum algae, which comes to wash up on the beaches
