The Sian Ka'an Reserve was created in 1986 and incorporated into the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. It is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico with 652,000 ha. It is composed of tropical rainforests, mangroves, lagoons connected by canals, freshwater streams and cenotes. The reserve is a sanctuary for more than 300 species of resident or migratory birds (flamingos, herons, pelicans, spoonbills, fish eagles, egrets...). It is also a real paradise for terrestrial fauna with 103 species of mammals (ocelots, monkeys, pumas, jaguars, grey foxes, anteaters, peccaries, tapirs...) which evolve among the 27 archaeological vestiges listed. As for the lagoons, their colours and tones vary according to the time of day; they are home to numerous aquatic species, including two species of tropical crocodiles and manatees. The coast, protected by a coral reef, is rich in lobsters and tropical fish; 4 species of sea turtles come to lay their eggs on the sand. A real paradise on earth...Several agencies, some of which are community-based, organize excursions into the reserve from Tulum. On the menu, visit of Mayan vestiges, swimming in the old Mayan channel, birdwatching, exploration of the mangrove in kayak..
