Cobá is an important Mayan archaeological site located 47 km from Tulum, on Route 109, in the interior. In pre-Columbian times, this city - which could have had up to 50,000 inhabitants - rivaled Chichén Itzá in size and beauty, with whom it fought for a long time for hegemony in the region. This is still true today in terms of tourism! Although Cobá has fewer buildings than Chichén Itzá, it has one of the highest pyramids in the entire Mayan area. It is also much wilder. To reach it, it is necessary to wander on paths scattered in the tropical forest, which confers to the site a charm of lost city... The panoramic sight since the top of the pyramid of Nohoch Mul to more than 40 m height is impressive. Cobá is one of the rare sites where one can still climb on a pyramid (but that could change soon...). Even if a rope facilitates the descent, it is necessary to have the heart well hung! To recover from your emotions and to refresh yourself, three cenotes are waiting for you not far from the archaeological site.Cobá has a large parking lot (60 US$). You can also get there by public bus and of course via organized tours. It is advisable to arrive early at the site. The walk in the shaded forest is pleasant, but you can also rent a bicycle (50 US$), or take the services of a bicycle cab (50 US$). A guide is a plus for those who want to dive deep into Mayan history.
