241 000 inhabitants. Altitude: 3,905 m. Struck by the blizzard of the Andes and its sun so close, lies the imperial city of Potosi, the eighth wonder of the world according to the Spanish chronicler of the 17th century, Don Diego de Ocana. After three centuries of splendor, this former center of the New World is today a sleeping city lying at the foot of what was the origin of its glory, the Cerro Rico. Europeans have no idea that part of their history was forged in the potosínas mines. The churches and convents, the colonial houses and the Casa de la Moneda have remained frozen, like an unchanging theater set.
