350 000 inhabitants. Altitude : 2 800 m. Doyenne of the colonial cities of South America, this jewel of baroque and Renaissance art is the most European of the cities of Bolivia and counts among the most beautiful cities of Latin America. Founded by order of Pizarro, in 1538, by Pedro de Anzures, Marquis of Campo Redondo, Sucre was destined to become the center of the Spanish bourgeoisie. The city is located in a basin of the Cordillera Oriental, at the foot of the mountains Sica Sica and Churuquella. According to the inhabitants, the largest mountain is the Macho (the male) and the smallest is the Hembra (the female), which the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano poetically refers to as the "mountains of love".
