The village of Salazie (600 m) is 18 km from Saint-André, about 20 minutes of gentle but impressive driving between the dizzying ramparts of the Rivière du Mât. The D48 passes under the famous "piss in the air", a waterfall which falls on the roadway, makes children laugh a lot and avoids washing in petrol stations! Then the road crosses the Staircase Bridge, where it is very pleasant to stop and admire the view of the river and the tiny church. After a few hairpin bends, we arrive in Salazie, a village at the bottom of the valley, at the entrance of the circus. From there two much more sinuous roads leave: one for Hell-Bourg, the other for Grand-Îlet. This village has a special atmosphere, as in a tropical Switzerland, with its pure air and alpine lights. The parish, in the centre of the village, was built in 1840, and the village has developed around it into a flower-filled and welcoming commune. However, the tourist activities, hiking and sightseeing, are rather concentrated in Hell-Bourg or Grand-Îlet. Salazie is a charming stopover, where you can discover the village, its Creole huts, its history, where you can admire the famous Voile de la Mariée waterfall and where you can go for a walk to the white waterfall or to the peaceful pond. Thanks to its location, the village of Salazie allows to radiate in the circus, to easily reach the urbanized coast and offers several strolls in the surrounding islets, off the beaten track: Ravine-Grosse-Roche, Bois-de-Pomme..
