An agglomeration of 34,000 inhabitants from which La Plaine-des-Palmistes can be accessed. The downtown area is of little interest, but the surrounding nature is magnificent. The area is renowned for its fishing, citrus fruit and banana production. The high rainfall (6 m per year!) has allowed the establishment of a hydroelectric plant in Takamaka, which is the occasion for a nice walk. One can spend an afternoon around Grand-Étang, the only high altitude lake of volcanic origin. Waterfalls and pools are numerous in the region and white water sports abound. The waterfront, laid out as a promenade, is equipped with a nautical base.
