Moûtiers lies in the lower part of the Isère valley, in the foothills of the Vanoise and Beaufortain massifs. An essential stop-off on the way to the ski resorts, particularly the Trois Vallées, Moûtiers is also well worth a visit to discover some of its treasures. One of the first inhabitants of the area once laid down his spatula-axe: he lived in the Middle Bronze Age... The object found by modern-day archaeologists attests to an occupation that goes back a long way. So Moûtiers has a long and rich history to tell. Much later, in Antiquity, it was the Ceutrons who occupied these lands. Then came the Romans, followed by various kings and lords, and the wars and conflicts of the medieval and revolutionary eras... The vestiges of this past speak volumes to the most curious visitors, and guided tours are the perfect way to make sure you don't miss a thing. Three of the city's monuments are listed as Monuments Historiques, including Saint-Pierre Cathedral and Saint-Pierre Bridge. In modern times, between industry and the white gold of the Olympics, Moûtiers became the tourist and sports town it is today. For cycling enthusiasts, a cycle path links Moûtiers to the Aigueblanche dam. Another follows the old RN 90 route through the Ponserand gorges.
