On the Matheysine plateau, the village of La Motte-d'Aveillans lies at an average altitude of about 900m, culminating at 1,617m. Crossed by the tracks of the Chemin de fer de la Mure, the town has a station where tourists can stop to visit the famous Image Mine and its underground galleries. Indeed, La Motte-d'Aveillans has a particular geology that has allowed to exploit until very recently one of the best coals in the world. On the surface, exceptional landscapes and a preserved environment for walks towards another local curiosity, the Pierced Stone, object of many legends.
