Beli ripari (Beautiful bank) was the name of Beaurepaire in Gallo-Roman times when the town was on the road from Rome to Vienne. A prosperous fortified town in the Middle Ages, it developed according to a curious checkerboard plan and depended on the Dauphins of Viennois. One of them, Jean II (1306-1319), granted various concessions and gave permission to surround the city with ditches, palisades and ramparts that were destroyed in the late 16th century. To see: the Augustins tower which houses the tourist office. Beautiful Renaissance facades give Beaurepaire an air of timelessness. Between Bièvres and Rhône, it is a pleasant base for visiting the region.
