The commune of Bouvante, 8 km south of Saint-Jean-en-Royans, has a vertical drop of over 1,000 m, from 1,700 m on the Montué ridges to 500 m at Bouvante-le-Bas. The Carthusian monks settled here in the 12th century. Today, it's the immense Lente forest that attracts tourists, from cross-country skiers in winter to hikers in summer. As for the village with its 200 or so inhabitants, it offers a peaceful stopover and the opportunity for quality agritourism. The commune is home to the artificial lake of the same name, located on the course of the Lyonne. It is the largest lake in the Vercors massif, which has few others due to its limestone nature.
