The first traces of Brénod (500 inhabitants) date from the5th century. The village then became a priory of the abbey of Nantua. After the revolt of the inhabitants against the monks in the 17th century, the latter were expelled and the abbey was destroyed. From the second half of the 19th century onwards, the commune was subjected to a rural exodus. The departure of the population was however compensated by the care of orphans from the hospices of Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse. In 1828, a cheese factory was built, specialising in the production of cheese, particularly Comté. This dairy, which became a cooperative, is still in operation under the name of Fromagerie de Brénod
