Located in the centre of the department, Le Montet is built on a hill that rises to 493 metres at the foot of its bell tower. The remains of monuments dedicated to the Gallic and Roman deities have been found there. From the early Middle Ages, Benedictine monks from Saint-Michel-de-La-Cluse founded a monastery. Archambaud III had a church built, larger than that of Souvigny, and for a long time the most imposing in the region. In 1095, Pope Urban II, who was visiting the region, resolved the conflict between Le Montet and Souvigny. In 1568, the Protestants ravaged the town, which nevertheless remained one of the main commercial centres of the canton, thanks to its fairs franchised by the monks, who would be the most important in the department for 400 years. In 1990, Le Montet was the smallest county town in the canton of France. The Montet region is also a typical rural landscape, made up of traditional buildings, ponds and ponds, and hedges, unique in the department.
