Located on the edge of the département, on the border with Indre-et-Loire, the landscape is already more akin to Touraine than Poitou. Vellèches takes its name from a small stream of the same name, now the ruisseau des Trois Moulins, which flows into the Vienne, formerly the Vielèche. The 12th-century church of Notre-Dame features a handsome bell tower-porch and a 17th-century stone altarpiece. At the top of a rocky spur, you'll find the Château de Marmande (whose underground passages date back to the 9th century) and its 30-metre tower (built around 1300). Admire its fortified enclosure on a hiking trail, and also see the gentilhommière de la Rie.
