The village, some 30 km southwest of Poitiers, grew out of the estate of Sancius, a wealthy Gallo-Roman landowner. Over time, Sanciacum became Sanxay (pronounced "Sansé"). From the 1st to the 4th century, the site was an important place of pilgrimage and cures. Remnants of this history include the temple, the amphitheater-theater (which can accommodate up to 6,500 spectators during the Soirées Lyriques summer festival) and the thermal baths. There's also a Romanesque bridge, late medieval houses, inhabited mills and the Château de Marconnay.
