The history of this commune of 364 inhabitants is closely linked to that of the priory of Villesalem. The priory was sold as national property during the Revolution. Of this building, only the imposing Romanesque church remains today, one of the most remarkable of its style in the Poitou. In summer, many concerts take place in the abbey church, classified as a historical monument. The village pond, located on a plateau of "terre de brandes" is a ZNIEFF zone. In the past, the village has known an important exploitation of its soils, which led to the opening of a railway station in the 19th century. This one is now closed.
