Fontgombault is located 8 kilometers northwest of the commune of Le Blanc, on which it depends, and is accessible via the D950. It is part of the Blancois natural region. It boasts a number of sites of interest, including the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault, built in the purest Romanesque style, and the 12th-century church of Saint-Jacques. The first traces of life found in the commune date back to the Palaeolithic or Neolithic periods. The town retained its rural identity until the arrival of the railroad at the end of the 19th century. Today, the town's 200-plus inhabitants call themselves Fontgombaldiens.
