in Gallo-Roman times, Pont-L'Abbé was known as "Sea Lips", in Latin Ponti-labium. Then located on the wide Arnoult estuary, in 1047 the Pontilabian lands were ceded by Geoffroy Martel to the Sainte-Marie de Saintes abbey. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, conflicts between the abbesses of Saintes and the English occupiers were turbulent, to say the least, as evidenced by the church of Saint-Pierre, the priory, the beautiful town gate, the moat and the underground passageways. Today, Pont-l'Abbé is renowned for its market gardens and its famous mojhettes, the flagship product of Saintonge gastronomy.
