Airaines was for a long time a border town between the Ponthieu, an English fief, and France. In 1477, it became definitively French. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the town prospered and the castle of the Sires of Airaines was rebuilt. From 1860 to 1940, Airaines has seventeen mills serving the economic development of the city. They made flour, oils, boards, bun combs, soaps, etc. Like many towns in the Somme, Airaines suffered the ravages of war. Today, Airaines is a peaceful town with well-maintained streets and shops.
