It was in La Fère, whose origins date back to the 5th century, that Eudes I, King of the Franks from 888 to 898, died. Tormented on many occasions since the Middle Ages, the city also suffered major destruction during the two world wars. Former headquarters of the Royal School of Artillery, the city is known to have housed since 1974 in its main square the statue of the gunner, the work of Auguste Arnaud, which previously adorned the Alma Bridge. The Jeanne d'Aboville Museum houses an impressive collection of European paintings from the 15th to the 19th century.
