On the borders of Ile-de-France, Champagne and Picardy, and near Reims, this peaceful village is a strategic base camp. Berry-au-Bac, with a population of 600, is located on the banks of the Aisne, on the edge of the Marne, on Chemin des Dames. In 1914, on the front line, only the river separated the belligerents from the village, which was totally destroyed. In view of the hardships suffered, it will be decorated with the war cross and the site of Hill 108 will be classified as a historic monument. In 1940, Berry-au-Bac was occupied but the damage will be much less significant. The presence of these two canals, the Canal latéral à l'Aisne and the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne, encourages industrial activity (silos, fertilizer plant). The village also strives to develop river tourism, along the river.
