Around 1007, Foulques Nerra built a fortress on the rocky spur overlooking the Mayenne and offered the command to an officer called Gontier. At the end of the 13th century, the city appeared as a fortified town of rectangular shape with 4 main gates within 2,400 metres of ramparts which were destroyed by order of Richelieu. The economy developed, based on tanneries, spinning and linen weaving. The position of Château-Gontier, in the middle of the Laval-Angers river traffic, contributed to its wealth. Today it is a city whose downtown area delights heritage lovers.
