This Green Station is bathed by the Varenne, Mayenne and Colmont rivers. Established on the border of the former province of Maine and Normandy, Ambrières-les-Vallées was built in the 11th century, protected by a fortress of William the Conqueror. From the top of its rock, the village offers a majestic image. The town preserves ancient granite weavers' houses. Weaving was the main activity of the Mayenne until the end of the Ancien Régime. At the Tourist Office you can obtain a small leaflet which details the historical circuit of the three washhouses which climbs from the Tourist Office, passing by a calvary, half-timbered houses, the Château des Tourelles, the Place aux Grains, the Weavers' Museum, open in summer, the church of Notre-Dame (12th century), open all year round. You can go down from the Weavers' museum through the narrow streets or by taking the 126-step staircase . Or enjoy a walk on the banks of the Varenne river and in the pomological conservatory orchard. Ambrières is home to the Vaux Leisure Park, a nature park with a pleasant stretch of water where many outdoor activities can be enjoyed. It has a campsite where you can stop with your horse (meadow, box) or by bike (bike reception). Bicycle hire.
