It is not known whether the name of this commune comes from the wide board which allowed its inhabitants to cross the Ognon, or its territory «flat as a plank». In the early centuries of our era, the Romans established themselves in the region and built a path that connected Nantes to Saintes (whose path marked the boundary with the municipality of Remouillé). Later, traders become acquainted with the advantages of geographical location. Indeed, the village of Vieillevigne, which was a hamlet, was part of the Common Avantagères Marches of Brittany and Poitou, which allowed its inhabitants to carry out transactions from one province to another without paying any fees. This privilege lasted until the Revolution of 1789. A parish was created in 1837 and the corresponding commune was created in 1855.
