Located on the left bank of the Loire, the municipality owes its name to the river "La Goulaine". Long linked to its neighbour Haute-Goulaine through history, the parish became autonomous in the th century. Many barges followed the course of the Goulaine in order to transport lime to Nantes. The floods of 1910 and 1936, despite the construction of the Divatte lifting, still remain in the memories. The latter, however, have fertilized land today devoted to gardening. Between vineyards and banks of Loire, Bas-Goulaine was renowned for its gastronomy. Its restaurants continue this tradition of, cuisine.
