Travel Guide Ossun

The name of the village of Ossun comes from Aüssu, a word that means bear in Gascon. It is the same bear that graces the blason of the Ossun barons. Village located 11 km from Tarbes, 10 km from Lourdes and its sanctuaries, and 40 km from the city of Pau. The heart of a large prehistoric necropolis, one can still contemplate a Tumulus on the Plateau de Ger, dominating the village of Ossun in the west. Its inhabitants used to have the occupation of a ro-ro. They were known for this occupation in a large part of France. That means they transported goods across the whole southwest to a mule. These animals brought to the markets of the neighbouring cities the butter and cheese made by the Ossunois themselves. They also lived through this dish activity. The architecture of ancient houses and church is of outstanding quality.
