Nestled in a fold of land, the village of Terraube spreads out on a rocky plateau. The houses of blond stone, the castle and the church provide that characteristic charm of the preserved villages of the Gers. Terraube has not always known this serenity. It was the place of a terrible massacre during the Wars of Religion. Blaise de Monluc, the king's lieutenant, had the throat slit of a Protestant garrison held prisoner there. Every June 19th, the inhabitants parade in procession around the statue of Saint Joseph who would have saved them from the Great Plague of 1653. It is one of the last villages in France to still engage in this practice.
