Saverdun, whose castle was built at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century on a promontory overlooking the Ariège, became the centre of a first fortified village, hence the Celtic name which means "fortress on the height". Saverdun keeps some traces of this past, in spite of the successive aggressions of which the city was the object. Today the old town of Saverdun is the centre of a rich agricultural production, especially in the irrigated plain; it strives to enrich its commercial, craft and industrial activities, essentially consisting of small and medium-sized businesses.
