The history of Hennezel, where water is very present, begins in the 14th century. The Duke of Lorraine wanted to develop the forests stretching from the Côney to the Saône. He sent for master glassmakers from the Bohemian and Bavarian borders to establish this industry in the region. There were 4 families, one of whom bore the Hennezel name. These glassmakers, known as "de grands verres", possessed a manufacturing secret that was handed down from father to son. This secret gave rise to an oath that remained in use until the 17th century: the Christophe d'Hennezel oath. Ruins of an ancient glassworks can be found in the Darney forest.
