Grand is no ordinary village. The Gallo-Roman sanctuary in the Vosges was known in ancient times as Andesina. Its 17,000-seat amphitheater, its mosaic (one of the largest in Europe), its underground water system - all these Gallo-Roman remains have intrigued historians. Why were such facilities built away from the main traffic routes? Grand was one of the greatest places of worship in the Roman Empire. Dedicated to the Gallic god Grannus, the site was later given over to the cult of Apollo. People came from far and wide to seek healing and meet the oracles, as did the emperors Caracalla and Constantine. The site was excavated in 1883 by Félix Voulot.
