Saint-Avold is part of the coal basin. Its inhabitants are known as Naboriens and Naboriennes. Founded in the 6th century by a monk who established an oratory and then a monastery, the town developed under the bishops of Metz, and then, in the 11th century, under the protection of a lay lord. Over time, Saint-Avold became a commercial crossroads, thanks to its geographical position. Proud of this past, Saint-Avold continues to develop its economy thanks to the petrochemical industry and is turning to the exploitation of its forestry resources. A rich historical and industrial heritage can be discovered in and around the town.
