The town of Sur-lès-Saint-Avold is located in a valley of the French-German Forestier forest. The watercourses of the Rosselle take its source in the territory of the commune, before heading towards Saint-Avold, Homburg-Haut then Forbach and passing to Germany, where it confluera with Saarland. Since 1985 Sur also houses a voluntary nature reserve of 79 hectares for the chiropterans, the first created in France by the Ministry of the Environment. Indeed, the so-called High Wood and Castelberg sites are dug from caves that serve as winter huts for bats. Fourteen species are present, including the Great Horseshoe, the Great Mouse, the Échancrées Ear Vespertilion, the Vespertilion de Bechstein and the Barbastelle of Europe.
