Montiers-sur-Saulx, surrounded by forest and water, was once famous for its blast furnace and venerable industrial know-how, whose origins date back to the 12th century. A large number of cast irons and merchant irons were produced here until the heyday in the 19th century, when the former Cistercian abbey of Écurey was converted into an art foundry. The site, which closed in 1986 and is now a listed historic monument, can be visited: Écurey pôle d'avenir, 3.5 km from the town center. A 17 km loop starting from the town hall provides access on foot (2h30) through woods and hamlets. Also worth seeing: Saint-Nicolas chapel (17th century) and the tower of the Joinville château (14th century).
