Ligny-en-Barrois has a population of about 4,000 and is nevertheless the capital of optics: the French company Essilor was established there in 1867 and it is possible to visit its high-tech workshops. Try the lorgnon, a pastry made of chocolate and ginger, with a gold ring and a pair of glasses on it. Ligny is the only stopover town in the Meuse, a green and hilly stopover on the RN 4 with a rich heritage. It was the birthplace of the Luxembourgs (1231-1719) who built a colossal fortress there: you can admire the remains (Valerian tower, ramparts). Bordered by the Ornain and the Marne-Rhine canal, the pleasant resort, equipped with a nautical relay, is well known to trout fishermen.
