From the top of its plateau, this typical Lorraine village overlooks the southern Argonne region. With its breathtaking views and picturesque, pastoral atmosphere, it's the only place in the département to have been awarded the "4 Fleurs" label. With its 14,000 plants, Beaulieu is worthy of a buzzing English garden, attracting many a summer visitor. In the 7th century, Beaulieu-en-Argonne was the site of an abbey founded by Saint Rouin, which was razed during the French Revolution. Today, you can admire a vestige unique in Europe: a 13th-century oak wine press. Head for the Argonne forest, where you'll find the mysterious Le Corbusier-style hermitage dedicated to Saint Rouin in 1961. Some hiking itineraries.
