Until the 19th century, the Grand-Bourg was called "le Grand-Bourg de Salagnac". Established between La Souterraine and Guéret, it is developed over a wide valley marked by the first foothills of the Massif Central. It is also crossed by the Gartempe river, which meanders here in several different ways. The centre of the Grand Bourg is dominated by the Notre-Dame church, dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Léobon. It then unfolds in a succession of large squares: the Place des Tilleuls, the Place du Champ de Foire and the Place du Marché.
