Things to see and do Franche-Comté

The Besançon, formerly known as «reach de Besançon», takes its source in a remote 350 metres above sea level and begins its course with a beautiful waterfall: the Grand Gour. Its flow varies from 30 litres per second in periods of low to… 15 000 during large water! His violent and brutal floods were frightened because they could cause big damage, but his hydraulic strength was appreciated: in 1860, it operated as many as 24 mills or factories. Although it is only 13 km away, the Besançon crosses five municipalities, three departments and three regions: Franche-Comté, Burgundy and the Rhône-Alpes region.

This gigantic staircase of water, made up of seven locks, was built on the will of Henri IV and his minister Sully during the construction of the Briare canal. Their objective? To unite the Loire with the Seine by means of canals, and even the Mediterranean with the Atlantic and the English Channel to better supply Paris. For more than two centuries, up to 4,000 boats passed through the canal each year, before it was abandoned in 1880. What remains is this architectural masterpiece, which is also the marvelous backdrop for the pyrotechnics show that takes place here every year at the end of July.

Housed in the former Ursuline convent, the Maison du Tourisme de l'Agglomération de Vesoul is a must for visitors wishing to discover the riches of the region. Visitors can find city maps, tourist guides, presentation brochures and information on upcoming events. What's more, the Maison du Tourisme offers internet access for hotel bookings and event information. Cyclists are also welcome, as the Maison du Tourisme has been awarded the "Accueil Vélo" label. Finally, the Maison du Tourisme also features a temporary exhibition room showcasing local artists every month.

There is still no Cistercian abbey but the chapel, bread oven and vines, exploited nowadays in the tradition of origin.

In the Mâcon competition of 1874, Emile Puzenat was awarded a first prize for an invention that would greatly facilitate the work of the fields: La En, Mr Puzenat will have at his disposal, a few years later, the creation of another revolutionary tool: horse rake. Thus, this museum presents an industrial retrospective of the Puzenat plant from 1882 to 1956 which revolutionized the farming world by facilitating the work of farmers. An exhibition complemented by many wooden tools of the time (over 400 transplanted).

This vineyard of the Haut Val d'Amour, inaugurated on June^1, 2019, received the Renou prize from the National Association of elected officials of the vine and wine. An achievement for the association of amateur winegrowers led by Christian Maréchal. The 38 old vines used in the past in the region occupy the plot enriched with a dry stone caborde (or shelter). This is a remarkable site because it overlooks the Loue valley. After having met the Argant noir, the Béclan and the Enfariné, a no less pleasant walk will complete your visit to the borders of the Doubs.

This museum was created in 1861 to accommodate the most significant Roman and medieval architectural elements (very beautiful fragments of tents and cornices), often too voluminous to be placed at the Rolin Museum. The stone museum is set in the ancient Romanesque chapel Saint-Nicolas, with the apse of the apse, adorned with a great Christ (th century fresco). The romantic garden is ideal for the scenes and lighting of the torchlight during the Night of Museums.

As a historic and gourmet town counting more than 6,000 inhabitants located halfway between Mâcon and Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus, called the Door of the South, boasts 4 starred restaurants! This birthplace of the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze attracts visitors who are charmed by the historic aspect of the city, its traboules, its docks of the Saône, its good gourmet stages and its many entertainments. The downtown offers you numerous quality shops with its medieval houses and its traboules to discover. Located at rue de l'Hôpital, the old hospices dating back to the 16th and 18th centuries accommodate the Dieu Musée Greuze hotel now where you can visit the hospices part with its three patient rooms as well as the museum exhibiting paintings, sculptures and contemporary works. You should not especially miss to visit the Saint-Philibert abbey, the Sainte-Madeleine church, the Saint-Laurent chapel, the Saint-Valérien church and the Musée du Vélo which recalls the little queen's history!
