WATARRKA NATIONAL PARK
Read moreWatarrka National Park is a national park of 71 000 ha. His Aboriginal name comes from a bush in the region. The park has been home to the Luritja Aborigines for over 22 000 years. The region was discovered late by the European explorer Ernest Giles in 1872. Watarrka includes the western part of the mountain chain called George Gill Range, located 300 km northeast of Uluru, with its irregular, steep rock formations, water holes and gorges that constitute a true refuge for the fauna and flora of the region. The park houses over 600 species of plants and animals. Here the relics of old yards can be seen along this pleasant walk to the pond. The total length of the road is paved and accessible in wheelchair and buggy/stroller. Water wells are sacred for Aboriginal people and important for wildlife. It is therefore strictly forbidden to bathe.
Camping in tent or caravan is not possible in the park. You can go to Kings Creek Canyon.

PAPUNYA GROUND PAINTING
Read moreIn the center desert, large paintings are carried out on the ground for ritual ceremonies. For colors and texture, blood, feathers, twigs and seeds are used. In the early 1970 s, Papunya's local artists began experimenting with acrylic painting on canvas where colored touches reproduced the motifs of their paintings on the ground. Today, the artists of the Western Desert movement are recognized among the best in Australia. Visit the Australian Museum website (www.australianmuseum.net.au/Collection-Stories-Western-Desert-Art) which holds nearly 100 paintings of this type.
