NORTH HEAD SANCTUARY
Sanctuary forming part of the Sydney Harbour National Park, home to numerous sites and buildings: Q Station, Fairfax Lookout, etc
Easily accessible from Manly, North Head Sanctuary is part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. While its western zone is occupied by Q Station and the center by the buildings of the Former North Head Army Barracks, which remained in service until 1998, the eastern and southern zones are particularly wild, offering breathtaking views from the top of the cliffs, especially from Fairfax Lookout.
Former North Head Army Barracks. A renovated site open to the public since 2007, most of the buildings are now occupied by private companies.
Q Station, a former quarantine station for passengers on ships arriving in Sydney, now transformed into a hotel residence. Join one of the year-round guided tours, including an unforgettable Ghost Tour and History Tour.
Third Quarantine Cemetery, a little way from the current facilities, where 241 people were buried between 1881 and 1925. Most died during epidemics. The other cemeteries were demolished because of the pollution risks they posed.
The Australian Memorial Walk Inaugurated in 2012, this memorial walk is a tribute to Australian servicemen from all wars. The cobblestone path features 6 memorials to the various battles fought by the Australian Army, including the famous Battle of Gallipoli.
North Head Scenic Drive. This beautiful scenic route links Fairfax Lookout to Manly along the south-eastern side of North Head. It offers magnificent views of Sydney Harbour, day and night, especially at sunset.
Fairfax Lookout. Accessible from North Head Scenic Drive along the Fairfax Track (1 km), you can admire the harbour and Sydney from the top of the cliffs. Fairfax Lookout is also a whale-watching site.
A signposted walk from Manly takes 1h30-2h around all these sites. This walk is an opportunity to discover the wildlife and nature of North Head, as well as the remains of the fortifications built between 1935 and 1938 to defend the entrance to Sydney Harbour from any outside attack.
A variety of facilities. Near the information center (on Scenic Drive), there is an Italian café-restaurant and a café in the Australian Bronze North Head sculpture workshop, housed in the former barracks.
