Events calendar Mexico

Created in 1987, this artistic festival offers concerts, theatrical performances, dance shows, plastic arts creations... It welcomes national and international stars but also more discreet events of jazz, classical guitar, opera and chamber music. The activities take place in the open air or in the city's performance halls. Religious celebrations are also numerous: Stations of the Cross, liturgical acts and processions.

For a week, a book fair is organised on the Place Square and in various museums in the historic centre. On this occasion, editorial houses come to present the titles they publish, and different artistic and cultural activities are planned to promote reading between the population. 

Every year, on the occasion of Gay Gay Day, gay, lesbian and especially community in Mexico City organizes a huge demonstration that leaves the Monument to Independence and ends on the Place du Zócalo.

On 8 December, we celebrate the feast of the Virgin of Purísima Concepción on the Place de la Conchita in Coyoacán. In the programme: fireworks, carnival games, and sweets to taste. 

This travelling documentary film festival, created in 2005 on the initiative of Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, has the particularity of travelling to several regions of Mexico: Mexico City, Chihuahua, Baja California, Coahuila, Jalisco, Michoacán, Puebla. More than 100 documentaries are presented each year, in as many locations. The screenings take place in traditional cinemas as well as in cultural spaces or in the open air. All of the country, all families, all individuals celebrate and unite with their loved ones on November 1. Nothing to see with the All. Here, the Feast of the Dead is a feast in colour. You can't miss it. The capital markets are filled with mâché paper skeletons, cempasuchil flowers, sweets, copal. After installing an altar in their home and offering offerings on the graves of their dead, the Mexicans are watching in cemeteries, eating, drinking, laughing and mourning the memory of those who left. A feast that you can live by visiting any cemetery in the city. In parallel, gigantic altars were mounted on the Zócalo and on the esplanade of the Ciudad Universitaria.

Founded in 1997 at the initiative of the French Embassy and the French Alliance of Mexico, this festival allows you to discover French films and Mexican short films of recent production. Several cinés from the capital participate in the event. Consult the programming on the Web site. 

The first bull of bulls that was organised in the Monumental Plaza de Toros in Mexico City took place on 5 February 1946. Every year, therefore, there is a bullfighting-anniversary to commemorate the event. Then follows a dead period until April-May, when officially begins the first bullfighting season of the year, the Temporada de Novilladas, so called, because the bullfighting pits young bulls to young toreros who have not yet taken the alternative. On May 5, the inhabitants of Peñon de los Baños in Mexico City staged a theatrical performance of the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during which the Mexican army, led by General Zaragoza, defeated Napoleon III's French army. A colourful show not to be missed! At the same time, the park, which contains the city's former forts, hosts a fair, while the city centre is dedicated to artistic expression.

The International Book Festival held in Guadalajara is the largest literary event in Latin America. Each year it attracts an audience of more than 700,000 people. The event provides an opportunity to discover the publications of nearly 200 publishing houses from dozens of different countries, to attend literary debates and conferences, and to participate in various cultural and artistic activities.

One of the most important festivals in Mexico is held in the capital's baseball stadium, Foro Sol. It's the Mecca for rock fans, who gather there every year to celebrate international and national stars. It's a chance to listen to rock music in Spanish (but not only) for the first time in your life. Other musical styles are represented, including ska and reggae bands. Warm up for two days and face five stages. Vive Latino is one of the biggest rock festivals in Latin America.

Mexico's major cultural festival, comparable to our Avignon Festival. Thousands of artists from all over the world come together to perform dance, theater and concerts. Entijuanarte is a large multidisciplinary festival of contemporary art that invites mainly local and regional artists. The idea is to celebrate art and culture in all its forms, with music concerts, dance performances, plays and literary events. Inaugurated in 2004, it attracts nearly 100,000 participants each year. It's the high point of this hyper-dynamic city's artistic and creative scene.
