This traditional native festival, with beautiful costumed dancers, is the most important in the city.

The most important cultural event in Oaxaca City. During this festival, Oaxaca receives representative communities from the 7 surrounding regions (Sierra Juárez, Tuxtepec, la Cañada, La Costa, La Mixteca, Los Valles Centrales, Istmo de Tehuantepec). They come to present a glimpse of their culture through dance and music performances and, before leaving, they distribute to the public objects representative of their region. These symbolic gifts are known as Guelaguetza (a Zapotec word meaning "participation").
