Borg el-Arab airport is a former military airport, capable of handling heavy long-haul flights. This is where all flights to Alexandria land while al-Nozha airport is being renovated. Located some 50 km from the city center, it takes at least 200 LE by cab to get there, and requires at least an hour's transport. A number of car rental agencies have set up branches here.

There are buses to Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab, but they take a long time as there are many checkpoints due to the unrest in Sinai, so it's better to take a domestic flight than a bus.
