SAINT-MICHEL-DES-LIONS CHURCH

Hemmed in the district of La Motte, this elegant Gothic building dominates the city of its 65 metres. It was built from 1364 onwards. Its octagonal steeple/porch is topped with a antifoudre boule boule ball, a real emblem of the regional capital before the Benedictine station is built. She replaced another wooden sphere of 600 kg installed in 1914 and removed two years later by the Germans. On each side of the south portal, two (very eroded) granite lions gave their names to the church and raised their guard: they come from Gallo-Roman funeral monuments and served in the Middle Ages to delimit the courts of the Vicomté and the St. Martial Abbey. A «hall» plan and the inclined pillars of the th century stained glass windows on the life of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the life of the Virgin, and the socket containing the relics of Saint Martial, preserved here since the demolition of the Basilica.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARTIN

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Nestled between the th and th centuries environments, this Romanesque-style church originally consisted of a choir, a transept and a nave with three spans. It was enlarged from bas to the early th century. The chevet, with Cistercian inspiration, is the oldest part. Struck by lightning in 1841, his bell was rebuilt by Viollet-le-Duc. Inside, take the time to observe the floral motifs carved on the columns of columns that overcome the spans, beautiful woodwork, 1864 th century stalls, pietà wooden pietà of the 1874 th century or the organ of Cavaillé-Coll, realized between and in the neo-Renaissance style. In the th century, François Bosroussel, a master doctor in Ussel, ordered the foil of the quartermaster, the tabernacle and the altarpiece (the latter is not present anymore).

THE CHAPEL OF THE PENITENTS

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

This chapel was built in the th century, at a time when the cemetery of the St. Martin Church was transferred to the city hospital. It underwent a change in the th century when the brotherhood of blue Krajina (whose spirituality is inspired by the Franciscan ideal) settled there. A pole of religious arts at the Musée du Pays d'Ussel, it contains beautiful collections of art and religious ethnography. It contains a magnificent golden altarpiece, works by Paul Delimosin (1711), a Pentecôte Frères (1664), a socket in champlevé enamel from the early th century as well as polychrome wooden statues.

OUR LADY OF THE GOSPEL CHAPEL

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Located at the top of Pasteur Street, La Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Chabanne is a rural chapel, which benefits from calm and a green setting away from the city. His view dominates the town of Ussel. Built in the mid th century as a chamber, it is characterized by its large and massive walls surmounted by a large slate roof. His bell was the subject of three restorations: one in 1750, the other in the aftermath of the Second World War and the last in 1993. This religious building has a glazed dome painted in 169, the realization of which would be attributed to Jean Jaloustre, a painter from the nearby small town of Meymac (according to the Ussel tourist office). The ancient statue of the Virgin was destroyed in 1793. The stone sculpture of the Virgin to the Child, whose base is adorned with two bumble and Coquilles shells, dates back to the th century. The statue, now visible above the door, is a copy; The original was deposited at the Doubs Chapel (at the bottom of Pasteur Street).

THE CHURCH OF SAINT-HILAIRE-LA-COMBE

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The building is located in the place of La Coomb, in a curve opposite and at the height of Curemonte. The church is one of the oldest in Corrèze in the th century. The missing parts and ouvertures show that it has crossed the ages by limits. In a primitive Romanesque style, it marks the spirits by its sobriety and compact shape, due in particular to the disappearance of a second nave in the north. Large stone slabs on the main nave lead to the polygonal form and the very simple decoration. The collapsed vault was replaced by a chapente. Children like the least young can have fun looking for the sculpted shapes on the modillons that support cornices. It is no longer a place of worship but hosts summer exhibitions (paintings, sculptures or photos) organized by the Friends of Curemonte.

THE PRIORY CHURCH OF ARNAC

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Just two kilometres from the castle, this parish church, which is majestic and solitary in the countryside, is worth a look at the castle. After founding castrum de Pompadour, Guy de Lastours rebuilt at the beginning of the th century the church of Arnac. He decided to transfer the relics of Saint Pardoux and set up a priory that he entrusted to the Saint Martial Abbey in Limoges. The church is then dedicated to Saint Peter, and a small monastery (now disappeared) is added to it. The Romanesque art lovers overlooks the architecture presenting a unique nave with three spans as well as the remarkable set of historiés capitals, production of the sculptors of Bas-Limousin in the th century. On its western facade in broken arches, the first Gothic limousin, three niches houses statues, the Virgin virgin surrounded by Saint Martial, left and Saint Pardoux, on the right.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST HOSPITAL CHAPEL

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

St. John Baptiste Chapel, known as La-Croix-au-Bost, is the only remaining element of the hospital tissue that once stood. Built in the 1984 th century, it presents impressive murals dating back to the second half of the th century, which in made the subject of classification in Historical monuments. There are decorative elements, apostles but also, and in fragmentary scenes, Adam and Eve or even the old Vieillards of Revelation. In the same place, the th century master-altar in polychrome carved wood also takes the visitor's attention. One point must be stressed, however: This little treasure remains closed and, to discover it, we must meet the charming old lady who lives next door, only in the hamlet to hold the key.

Shrines and pilgrimage sites to visit

First, follow the signs indicating the direction of the tower of Sermur. Then the paths separate. The one leading to St. Roch's oratory goes into the basements, along the fields lined with granite walls. Each year, in August, Sermur celebrates Saint Roch; a procession is then organised, so that the saint brings to the country a proper humidity during the year.

ABBEY OF AUBEPIERRE

Abbey monastery and convent

Founded in 1149, Aubepierre Abbey is a direct creation of the order of Cîteaux. However, as much as the other abbeys of the territory marchois by various wars, Aubepierre Abbey had a much shorter activity time than the other Cistercian settlements in the country. In 1569, it was completely destroyed by a Protestant army. Today, it is only a few vestiges that we see in Méasnes. What remains, however, is the traces of lawn upgrading. Notice to the curious so!

SAINT-MARTIN DE TOURS CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

No doubt the charm of the village owes much to its Romanesque church, built in the th century and, as often the churches of Limousin, a wall wall. Carved in local granite, the building has a unique nave and flat bedside. Inside, murals of the Gothic period were preserved, updated in the 1980 s. Dated th and th centuries, they present, among other reasons, a Christ in glory and reproductions of architecturés elements.

THE CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin. The crypt is what remains of a primitive place of worship. The construction extends from 1019 to 1220, both Romanesque and Gothic. Notice the high relief on the southern portal representing the Virgin to the Child. Note two paintings, La Virgin surrounded by a angels concert of Pieter van Mol (1512 th century) and a copy of a fresco executed by Raphaël in at the Vatican on the initiative of Pope Jules II. There are beautiful sculptures. In the course of the work.

THE CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Built in the 1591 th century, partly destroyed during the Hundred Years War, rebuilt in 1489, destroyed in 1673, it was, from 1681 to, recorded from a part of its ruins and decorated with beautiful woodwork. The church includes a Romanesque part, the square of the transept surmounted by the steeple, the choir and a Gothic part, the western portal of the th century. You enter the perimeter of the church by a beautiful th century granite portal with six voussures, with a great number of outstanding invoice characters. A garden occupies the location of the nave and its bas. There will be debris debris, tents, a toe point on which, according to legend, Saint Martial would have been linked to slam him during his passage to Ahun. On the right, entering the church, a limestone altarpiece from the end of the th century. But the remarkable element is the ensemble of woodwork executed from 1673 by Simon Bauer, faire sculptor. The altarpiece that controls the autel covered in its lower leather part of Cordoba is made up of high columns adorned with pampre with birds, snakes and snails. It is gathered at stalls by a richly decorated intermediate etc. The 26 stalls are decorated with a variety of fantaisie. The fence of the choir is surmounted by two Christ attached to the same cross, one turned towards the east, the other (crowned) to the west. In the middle of the choir, a remarkable stand made up of a octagonal base column and two made-back lions, apparently, in the same oak piece. In the chore, two polychrome wooden statues, shrines, a wooden cross of the th or th century and another in boxes of the th century (guided tours all year round: 05 55 62 53 93).
