THE PUY DU BASSIN CHAPEL
A statue of the Virgin on an 8 m high pedestal located in Auriac, the highest point of the white Xaintrie
Le Puy du Bassin is the highest point of the Xaintrie Blanche at 709 m, with a breathtaking view of the Monts d'Auvergne. To get there, you have the choice between a path through the forest or the road by car which ends in a track. Either way, the arrival at the chapel is a surprise. In this haven of greenery, a statue of the Virgin placed on an 8 m high pedestal seems to guard these places of meditation. It is here that, for centuries, the procession of 15 August has taken place. Founded in 1918 on the ruins of a former chapel, the building is not locked but the door is simply held by a latch, thus facilitating the visit of passing pilgrims. Inside, a starry sky beautifully covers the top of the altar. On the ground, a stone base marks the passage of the meridian of Paris.
