Thauvenay is just less than 5 km south of Sancerre and 2 km from Menetréol-Sancerre towards the Chapel-Montlinard. The commune bordering the lateral canal in the Loire and its vineyards are located in the appellation of origin controlled by Sancerre. The vineyard of Thauvenay Castle dates back to 1819. It was established by the Earl of Montalivet, then Minister of the Interior of Napoleon. Around 1880 Phylloxera was right for the vineyards that were replanted by Baron Arthur de Chabaud la Tour, grandson of the Earl of Montalivet. They were then published in 1966 by his great grandson, Count Georges de Choulot. It has opened the market to the whole world. Today the Count and Countess Georges de Choulot de Chabaud la Tour are the owners and managers of the Domaine de Thauvenay estate. The municipality also has an old lace and a Romanesque chapel of the xiith century.
