Saint-Eloi-de-Gy is located ten kilometers east of Mehun-sur-Yèvre. Mention is made of this small municipality of 1,500 inhabitants in the Jules Caesar Gaul War about iron mines. Prior to 1789, Saint-Eloy-de-Gy was a simple and regular priory dependent on the Abbey Saint Sulpice of Bourges (which thus saw the main part of the tits paid by the inhabitants of this parish).Louis-Hector Chaudru de Raynal, author of the Story of Berry, wrote between 1835 and 1844 is a personality attached to the commune where he withdrew and eventually died. Louis Hector Chaudru de Raynal was born in Bourges on January 28, 1805. Professor of Belle Letters at 18, at the College of Bourges, his father, Pierre Chaudru de Raynal was promoted rector of the Academy of Bourges under the Empire. Removed from the Restoration he found his position in 1816, and kept him, except for a few years in Paris, and then Inspector General of Studies until his death in 1849. Louis-Hector studied at the Louis-le-Grand high school before entering the Faculty of Law. He was a license holder in 1825 and joined me in the firm of Barthe, a lawyer in the bar of Paris. Four years later Louis-Hector Chaudru de Raynal returned to Bourges and joined the Bar of the Court of Appeal. The revolution of 1830 made Barthe a politician and his protégé was invited to enter the judiciary. At the outset, he was appointed as a substitute for the Attorney General at the court of Bourges at the age of 25. Very quickly Louis Hector Chaudru de Raynal was introduced into the cultivated society of Bourges, who encouraged him to move towards historical research. He decided to write a local story of the Berry. He had found that his province had no history of value or at least homogeneous. Simple distraction at the beginning, this historical research became a hard work for him.In 1833, Louis-Hector Chaudru de Raynal was a substitute for the Attorney General at the Royal Court of Bourges, 5 years later, he was Advocate General, and 1 st Advocate General in 1841. The advent of the iie led to his dismissal by Mr. Crémieux in March 1848. But he was soon reinstated in his employment and promoted, in July 1849, Attorney General to the Caen Court of Appeal where he stayed 3 years.In 1853 he was called as Advocate General at the Court of Cassation. First Advocate General in 1864, President of the Chamber of Motions in 1875 and Attorney General in 1877. Dismissed 2 years later by Mr. Dufaure, he retired to Saint-Eloy-de-Gy.In 1840, Louis Hector Chaudru de Raynal entered Bourges City Council, which he remained a member for several years. At the end of the Second Empire the seat of General Adviser to the Township of Saint-Martin-d 'Auxigny was left vacant by Mr. Tourangin, he was elected as General Adviser of the Canton.Louis-Hector Chaudru de Raynal died in his property of Vernay, commune of Saint-Eloy-de-Gy, on April 4, 1892, at the age of 87.
