Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys owes its name to the monk Gildas, who rid the region of a dragon. He dragged it to the tip of the Grand-Mont, from where his horse leapt to Houat. We can still see the mark of the hoof in the rock. The dragon was released above the waves where it was engulfed. Saint Gildas founded a monastery in the 6th century and was, for centuries, the spiritual and intellectual center of the peninsula. In 1125, Pierre Abélard, in love with Héloïse, after having been exiled in the orders, re-established the discipline in the community of Saint-Gildas, whose morals had clearly relaxed. The parish church can be visited.
