The name comes from the Breton ploe, meaning parish, and from Emel (name of a Breton emigrant leader who came to settle around the 7th century). It is probably the ploue founded by Saint Meir, otherwise unknown, but which could be linked to the Latin Marius. The town is close to Auray and is about 35 km from Lorient. Ploemel has many woods and undergrowth, ideal for pleasant walks or bike rides, as well as the Mané Bogad lake and park. Several chapels and fountains are also to be discovered like those of Saint-Cado and Saint-Laurent. The Notre-Dame de Recouvrance chapel is also worth seeing.
