Sentinel at the entrance to the roadstead of Lorient, Port-Louis was once called Blavet. In 1590, the city was occupied by the Spaniards who built the fort of the Eagle. In 1618, Blavet became Port-Louis in honour of Louis XIII who ordered the enlargement of the citadel and the fortification of the town. The commercial activity of Port-Louis moved to the other bank chosen as the site of the India Company. In the 19th century, the maritime city converted to fishing.
